Colombia’s Gastronomy – An Explosion of Flavor
One of the pleasures of traveling is the opportunity to taste different types of food. Food has always played an important role in connecting us to new places and is the easiest way to immerse ourselves in the local culture.
When you visit Colombia make sure you take some time to discover the local cuisine. Colombian gastronomy is as diverse as its culture and landscape. Depending on the region, it offers a rich mix of dishes that carry with them a great combination of flavors and textures. Some of the typical dishes you should try are:
Ajiaco: A creamy chicken soup prepared with different types of potatoes and maize.
Sancocho: This filling and hearty soup is prepared with corn, vegetables, large piece of plantain, spices and beef.
Arepa: Prepared with arepa flour or cornmeal, this artisanal tortilla represents an essential part of the Colombian daily diet. It can be served with spread butter and cheese on top or avocado.
Bandeja Paisa: This is probably one of the most popular dishes. It comes from the Antioquia department where people are known as paisas. Its main ingredients consist of red beans, pork, white rice, ground meat, chicharron (fried pork), fried egg, plantain, chorizo, arepa, hogao (a type of sauce prepared with onions, tomatoes, garlic, cumin, salt, and pepper).
