Chachapoyas, The City Among Clouds
Known as the “Peruvian Tower of Babel”, Kuelap is an ancient stone fortress that was strategically built by the Chachapoyas (or Cloud People) up on a mountaintop whose western flank is an imposing precipice. The citadel covers an area of around 6 hectares (14 acres), with some 420 circular buildings that include a watchtower and a castle. All of it is set amid rolling forested hills and small rural communities.
Adventure Associates invites explorers to visit this Peruvian region on a new 4-night program that will let them explore the Gocta Waterfall, an impressive, 2,529 ft. tall waterfall that’s surrounded by amazing views. We recommend overnighting at Gocta Lodge and using it as a home base for exploring this area.
This program also offers a full-day visit to the Quiocta Caverns that were once the cemetery for the nobility of the Chachapoyas people. Additionally, visitors will get to experience the impressive burial structures of Karajia Sarcophagi – one of the most unique in the world. All-in-all: this is an exciting combination of adventure and history.
