These reptiles have a unique pink coloration predominating on their bodies’ skin. At that time, the newly discovered and relatively small population of these iguanas, were considered only a variation, perhaps just an exceptional mutation, of the commonly known species found on the rest of the Archipelago, but limited to this particular area. During the month of June, a team of 24 Park wardens and officials from the main office in Santa Cruz and the Technical Offices of the Islands of San Cristobal, Isabella and Floreana, spent several days on the southernmost Island of the entire group, Española or Hood Island, with the specific purpose of conducting a special monitoring of the island’s giant tortoises; the waved albatross population and some vegetation species.
