Peru has many reasons to be proud of in the world of tourism and travel: its numerous and varied, natural and cultural attractions; a solid reputation as an outstanding, safe and worthy travel destination; the growing fame of Peruvian gastronomy and a well positioned international image, are just some of the reasons to be proud of.
The prestigious international image of Peru has been, to a large extent, the result of decades of intense and dedicated work, conducted intelligently and strategically by the Andean country’s Commerce, Exports andTourism Promotion Board, PromPeru. Reflecting such good work, PromPeru recently received a well deserved distinction: winning the award as the “Leading South American Tourist Board”, during this year’s edition of the World Travel Awards, considered by high prestige sources such as the Wall Street Journal, as the “Travel industry’s equivalent to the Oscars”. The award was presented at the Caribbean and the Americas stage of the World Travel Awards Gala Ceremony held in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Peru`s close competitors were the tourism boards of Argentina, Ecuador, Chile, Brazil and Rio de Janeiro.
The Caribbean and the Americas Ceremony marks the fifth and final leg of World Travel Awards Grand Tour, following similar stages in Dubai, United Arab Emirates; Antalya, Turkey; Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt and Bangkok, Thailand. The Regional winners of these events, progress into a Grand Final contest, to crown 2011’s “Best of the Best”. The World Travel Awards were established in 1993, to acknowledge excellence in the world’s travel and tourism industry, in several categories, which include the diverse sectors which comprehend the vast and diverse outreach of the tourism activities worldwide.
PromPeru was awarded the prestigious distinction, among many other factors, for its systematic, successful, innovative and intensive campaigns which include high-profile participation at the world travel industry’s most important Fairs, congresses and events; as well as for its very successful Roadshows, Presentations and tourism caravans; top quality information materials; well planned and extremely interesting Fam Trips and Press Trips, as well as for the dedicated, personalized, efficient and hospitable attention of its staff and personnel. Upon receiving the award, Maria del Carmen de Prepares, Director of Prom Peru, thanked the hard work of the Institution’s team as well as the collaboration of its partners overseas. She commended the creativeness and hard work of Prom Peru’s team, both in Lima and overseas, who “worked so arduously over the past year to promote the diversity of Peru”
Further distinctions were given to Peru, as its most representative tourism attraction and national icon, the Inca Citadel of Machu Picchu was hailed as South America’s Leading Green Destination for the second year and Lima’s Jorge Chavez International Airport also won the South America’s Leading Airport Category.
These recognitions are a good motivation for Peru’s Tourism Promotion Board, as well as for the national authorities and the private tourism sector, to continue working, in a joint and effective effort, to upgrade Peru’s already well deserved elevated positioning as one of the Top South American and a World Class Tourism Destination……
