Intinerary Description
DAY 01: BOGOTÁ
Arrive at El Dorado International Airport, Bogotá. Met and greeted by tour guide and transferred to the selected hotel for checking-in.
Bogotá is a modern fast growing city and one of Latin America’s urban highlights with a thriving nightlife, superb dining and al fresco café and bar culture; yet none of the traditions are lost from its graceful churches, excellent museums to its plazas and urban parks.
DAY 02: BOGOTÁ/CITY TOUR – ZIPAQUIRÁ + LUNCH
Breakfast and transfer to the well preserved historical colonial quarter of La Candelaria. There will be an opportunity for photographs at Plaza de Bolivar, the main square of Bogotá. The Cathedral, the Congress Palace, the Cardinal’s Palace, the colonial church of El Sagrario, the House of Independence, the Palace of Justice and the City Hall are located here.
After visit the famous and ‘must see’ Gold Museum, where the world’s greatest collection of pre-Hispanic Indian gold crafts is displayed. Next visit the FERNANDO BOTERO Museum which contains paintings and sculptures of this famous contemporary Colombian artist.
NOTE: The Gold Museum is closed on Mondays and the Botero Museum is closed on Tuesdays.
Later, driven through the northern residential area of the city and through the fertile plateau to the small colonial town of Cajicá, where a short stop will be made at the main plaza. Lunch included. After a hearty lunch the tour continues to the town of Zipaquirá famous for its underground salt cathedral. Experience this extraordinary architecture where the Stations of the Cross and three naves are eerily illuminated along with other sculptures and cavernous pools; all hewn from the salt mine tunnels under the Halite Mountains. Though a popular tourist destination it is still a place of pilgrimage for the local community.
Return and overnight in Bogotá.
DAY 03: BOGOTÁ/CHICAQUE NATURAL PARK + LUNCH
Breakfast and transfer to Chicaque Natural Park. After 1 hour you will arrive at this amazing park with a beautiful fog forest as long as the eyes can see. Here you will make a 3 hour trekking through an ecological path. During your tour you will learn about the flora found in this forest and listen to the singing of some birds. After arriving to “El Refugio” you will have some time to rest and then your tour back starts. You will have the option to go back on a traditional jeep or on horseback riding.
Arrival at Arboloco Restaurant and lunch included. Return to Bogotá and rest.
DAY 04: BOGOTÁ – CARTAGENA
Breakfast and early morning transfer to the airport for the flight to Cartagena. Met and greeted by the guide and transfer to the selected hotel.
Cartagena is truly a highlight of Colombia. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site the city has a wealth of character that will capture any traveller’s senses, from its well preserved colonial architecture, romantic atmosphere, vibrant flora, balmy temperature, excellent cuisine and amazing sunsets over the Caribbean to its warm and inviting people. It was this alluring setting that fueled the imaginative powers of Gabriel García Márquez to write ‘Love in a time of Cholera’.
DAY 05: CARTAGENA/CITY TOUR
Breakfast and free morning. An afternoon a tour to the most important monuments of the city will follow lunch. Firstly driven to the Convent of La Popa built at the beginning of the 17th century on the hill of the same name. From there a magnificent view of the city and the bay can be seen. The tour will then continue on to San Felipe's Fort, built in the 17th century to protect the city from marauding invaders. After a tour looking at the construction of this impregnable fortress, there will be a stroll to the walled colonial city and stop at the colourful handicraft stores of Las Bóvedas where the local artisans display their ware. From there, transported to the Convent of San Pedro Claver, named in honour of the Spanish born monk who was known as the “Apostles of Blacks”. The tree filled courtyard of the convent houses religious and pre-Columbian artefacts.
Return to the hotel and overnight in Cartagena.
DAY 06: CARTAGENA - ROSARIO ISLANDS - CARTAGENA
Breakfast and morning transfer to the tourist pier and departure by motorboat to the beautiful Rosario Islands archipelago, located an hour and a half south of the Bay of Cartagena. These islands have been declared a National Natural Park as it has one of the most important coral reefs of the Caribbean Colombian coast. Populated with a great variety of reef fauna; white sandy beaches and beautiful crystal clear waters all harmonise to make this impressive scenery. There will be opportunity to swim or snorkel, or laze in a hammock and let the imagination drift as one soaks in the heady atmosphere of this sensual city.
Lunch included, return and overnight in Cartagena.
DAY 07: CARTAGENA – SANTA MARTA
Breakfast and transfer to Santa Marta. On arrival transfer to the selected hotel for checking in. Free afternoon.
DAY 08: SANTA MARTA – ADAM’S HOUSE
Breakfast and trip by truck with the whole equipment and the porters during 2 hours on the Panamerican Highway towards the north. Then for approx. 1 hour on an unpaved road to the settlement of Mamey. There the mules will be loaded and the trekking will begin. The first 2 ½ hours will be walking up through a zone that has been deforested by colonists to plant bananas, mandioc, etc. On the way, opportunity to take a bath in the river El Machete. Arriving at an altitude of 600 mts, participants will continue walking through places shaded by secondary forest during 2 hours to the colonist Adam’s house; there hammocks will be hung up with its mosquito nets for the night. Opportunity to take a bath in a nearby river. Dinner and overnight.
DAY 09: ADAM’S HOUSE – GABRIEL’S HOUSE
After breakfast, start of trekking through deep forest during 6 hours. Half the way the Indian reservation of the Koguis, descendants of the Tayronas, begins. Trekkers will pass through an Indian village and will have the opportunity to see some of the Indians and perhaps speak to them. This village are only used for special meetings and therefore usually they are almost empty. Inside the Indian reservation the overnight will be in the house of the only colonist of the area, whose name is Gabriel. Before dinner a magnificent bath can be enjoyed in Rio Buritaca. Overnight in beds.
DAY 10: GABRIEL’S HOUSE – RUMUALDO’S HOUSE/CIUDAD PERDIDA VISIT
Breakfast and walking during 6 hours crossing many times the Rio Buritaca; sometimes swimming, sometimes just walking in the river. On the way, spots removed by treasure hunters can be recognized. Arrival at Rumualdo’s house where you will spend the night. If the day has good climate you will continue trekking towards Ciudad Perdida, by climbing more than 2000 stone stairs, built by the Tayronas as far as the legendary city.
The afternoon will be dedicated to visit the ruins of this spectacular city discovered in 1976 and built by the Tayrona between 500 and 700 A.C. Ciudad Perdida is until our days the most important settlement of the Tayrona Culture, possibly the capital of the region. It is located at the shore or Rio Buritaca and spreads from 800 to 1300 mts. above sea level. Its axis is a wide stairway that begins at the river shore and continues on the crest of the mountain branching to left and right into secondary paths that go towards the many dwelling terraces. The majority of the terraces served as foundations for 2 to 4 huts.
Return to Rumualdo’s house, dinner and overnight.
DAY 11: RETURN TO GABRIEL
Breakfast and return during 6 hours till Gabriel’s house, crossing several times the Rio Buritaca and meeting Indians on the way.
DAY 12: RETURN TO ADAM
Breakfast and trekking for 4 hours as far as Adam’s house.
DAY 13: MAMEY - TAYRONA NATURAL PARK
Breakfast and trekking for 3 hours to the settlement of Mamey, where a truck will be waiting for a trip of 3 hours to Tayrona Natural Park. Arrival to the park, check in at the Ecohabs and rest.
