Inca Trail

This adventure will take you on one of the nicest parts of the Inca Trail entering Machu Picchu by way of "The Gate of the Sun" at sunset, the way the ancient Incas did. This is a great alternative for people who do not have the time to do the classic 4 day route. The trail is an adventure in itself, but on the second day, you’ll be able to focus all your attention on the supreme experience- Machu Picchu!

Itinerary

Day 1:

Transfer to Ollantaytambo station (depart Cusco by car about 6:15 AM) for vista dome train to KM 104 in the morning, disembark & begin a full-day hike with guide via the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. We will then visit the Chachabamba archaeological complex (2150 meters) located very close to the control point where we begin the 8 km trek.  In about four hours we arrive at the archaeological complex of Winaywayna (2700 meters).  This is an impressive site made up of an agricultural center with numerous terraces, a religious sector and an urban sector. On the way up we will have magnificent views of the Urubamba River valley and the Choquesuysuy archaeological complex located on the other side of the river. There is also a beautiful waterfall located just a few minutes away from Winaywayna. We will then climb to Intipunku, or the Sun Gate. This will take an hour of hiking along a trail of flat stones on the edge of cliffs in highland jungle. From this fabulous spot, we will have our first view of the sacred citadel of Machu Picchu. We will then descend to the Lost City of the Incas.  Please be prepared to carry a small pack & also have worn-in hiking boots. Accomodation at the Santuary Lodge or in Aguas Calientes.  All 3 meals are included on this day.

Day 2:

Get up early to be among the first to arrive at the most spectacular archaeological site in Peru. A guide will lead you on a private tour through the park. Afterwards you’ll have time to explore the ruins on your own and hike up the stone stairway to the top of Huayna Picchu, the awe-inspiring peak that overlooks Machu Picchu. Catch the late afternoon train back to Cusco and transfer to your hotel.
