The splendid and remote Patagonian lands will be again the highlight of special cruises, offered by Cruceros Austrails in 2010, designed to continue commemorating the bicentennial of Charles Darwin’s birth. The historic and scientific importance of Darwin’s visit to the southernmost parts of South America and the Galapagos Islands, became paramount to spotlight the uniqueness of their natural history, environment, fauna, flora and human habitation.
This is why the well known Patagonian Cruise Line, Cruceros Australis, has organized two spectacular voyages to cruise the Strait of Magellan, the Beagle Chanel and several of the places visited by Darwin, a unique opportunity to experience the majestic beauty, impressive solitude and wilderness of these areas. First cruise is a three night voyage from October 16 to October 19, (Saturday to Tuesday), departing from the “World’s end” Argentine port of Ushuaia and terminating in Punta Arenas, Chile. The second cruise, a 4 night voyage, begins in Punta Arenas, Chile on Tuesday, October 19 and finishes in Ushuaia, Argentina on Saturday, October 23.
Both cruises focus highly on the amazing land of Tierra del Fuego and backtracks Darwin’s celebrated trip and adventures, vividly narrated on his “Voyage of the Beagle” book. These modern day recreations of the historic voyage take place in total comfort and safety, aboard the Via Australis and will be enhanced by the presence of the renowned North American author and historian, John Woram, a specialist in Darwin (who also leads special trips to the Galapagos Islands). He and other highly qualified guest lecturers will provide most interesting talks about the trip which cradled Darwin’s revolutionary ideas about the geology and natural history of Patagonia, just as you cruise by the very places through which the HMS Beagle sailed in the nineteenth century with the then young naturalist Charles Darwin aboard together with Captain Fitzroy and his crew.
Little change has come since then to the Fuegian archipelago and its labyrinth of islands, islets and canals. A keen observer, Darwin made important discoveries about the geologic origin and conditions of the region, which went beyond the scenery and the basic elements. The Via Australis special cruises and John Woram and his colleague’s lectures will revive the famed voyage and make the guests on board participate in the discoveries made by Darwin, almost two centuries ago.
The primitive aborigines who made such a lasting impression on young Charles Darwin are no longer there, but the land remains intact, just as he saw then.
Adventure Associates will be delighted to put all of its experience and know-how in the area to customize a trip for you, to join either or both of the October 2010 cruises, an experience not to be missed by those with a zest for life and the emotion of visiting some of our planet’s most remote and fascinating lands, an unforgettable experience, enhanced by the best lectures and the knowledge of professionals who will make the trip a memorable one…..
